JLPT N5 - December - Revision!

Its that time again!

The JLPT exams are in 4 days. December 6th.

I have a lot of revision to do. I decided to post up the revision tools I will be using. Hope you all have something similar!

Basics!
 It is always good to keep refreshing on your hiragana and katakana. You use it a lot more than you realise! After studying, I realised I need to brush up on my katakana. If you feel its not sticking, write them out again.


 Go through the minna no nihongo lessons we went through. Which were the vocabulary and grammar explanation!


 Recently I wrote up the grammar points in the Japanese from Zero books. It has helped a lot. I will post these up seperately so you can read through them!


 Kanji! Kanji kanji kanji! You will be tested on this! You need to know it both ways. What hiragana makes up a kanji. It will ask you to chose the kanji, and then to chose the correct spelling of a kanji. make sure you are familiar with these!


Last but not least, the JLPT mock exam. It is best practise to give them a try, its the same format at the actual exam, so you wont get any nasty surprises. You can find them on the JLPT website. Free to download. Even if you just read through it, at least you won't be caught off guard and have an idea of what you are walking into.

I plan on revising for the rest of the week. I hope to pass this time. I wish everyone good luck in their exam - whatever the level! You can do it!

JLPT Kanji N5 - 1-20

I have receivedmy results and they weren't what I would have liked, however I wasn't that far off a pass! I will be re-taking. It was an experience for me, I had no idea what I was getting into and I now know what I need to work on!

So, I have decided to go through the Kanji and vocab as much as I can to help myself, and you, to memorise and become familiar with it. I will be posting up a few other things too, but I shall be starting off with the kanji. I am splitting it up into groups of 20 as there are 103 for the N5!

JLPT N5 - Update & Experience

Hey there!

I am so sorry for the lack of activity lately. I have been under so much I have been stressed out and unable to focus on my blogging.

However I do have an update.

I did the JLPT N5 today. It was absolutely nerve wracking when I got there. I felt ill, I wanted to go home and curl up in a corner. But I stayed and I went through it. I met some lovely people, shame I didn't get their contacts! We had a good laugh and kept in good spirits through the whole afternoon. I think it helped, being able to have a laugh and a chat in between exams to keep the nerves and stress level down.

How did I do?

I honestly have no idea if I passed or not. Looking at the grading method, I might have scraped by. Maybe I passed fine, maybe I failed. If I didn't pass, at least I can take the one in December - online registration is August. We should get the results in September? I think they get posted online earlier than that. I shall keep you posted!

About the exam:

Paper 1: Paper 1 was Kanji and vocabulary. This paper was quite easy to go through. It is only 25 mins long. Which is plenty of time. It isn't as scary as it sounds. There was roughly 32 questions on this paper. First part of the paper is Kanji recognition. So it was a sentence and you had to chose which the correct kanji or vice versa of a certain word was.
Second part of the paper was sentence construction. You had to complete the sentences with the words given. Fill in the blank!


Paper 2: Paper 2 was Grammar and Reading Comprehension. The first part was to correctly insert the right particle into the paragraph. It was all one written paragraph and had numbered squares in places. Each one numbered with the question number, you had to fill in the box with the particle. 
Second part of the paper was another sentence construction. So you had the start of a sentence then you had to fill in the blanks with the words or particles given, and you are marked on the star ★. The final part of the second paper was reading comprehension. You had huge paragraphs that you had to read through, then answer questions based on that paragraph. 
        For example: it could be about someone's shopping day. What did they buy? Where did they buy it? It is all written in the paragraph.

Paper 3: Paper 3 was Listening. This paper you sit at your desk and a series of conversations are played out loud into the room, each one ending with a question. First series of questions were pictured on the exam paper. To give an indication of what the conversation was. The next part was just words on the paper, the last part had nothing on the paper and it was just concentration on the conversation itself and you picked from the choices spoken out-loud what the answer was.
      For example: the CD will say a phrase, the answers will be a response. you have to choose which is the correct response for the initial phrase.


Paper 1: I think I did quite well on this one. My Kanji recognition is quite good. My katakana not so much but I think I did well on that one.

Paper 2: I did terribly on this. I thought my reading was up to scratch, but apparently not. I ended up looking at the answer choices then finding the similar thing in the paragraph.

Luckily, paper 1 and 2 are marked as 1 paper. So hopefully, one out-weighs the other!

Paper 3: I think I did rather well, even though I changed a few answers...then realised I should have kept the initial answer. We shall see how much I messed up. It wasn't as scary as I thought it would be, a lot easier than I imagined.

Hope I did well, if not, I can always re-sit in December! All in all, it was a very good experience. Met some nice people and learned a lot!

Japanese From Zero Book 3 and other update

Greetings!

I apologise for my lack of posting. I haven't been studying much due to personal reasons.

I am hoping to get back on track. I have been accepted as a candidate for the JLPT N5 exam in July this year so I need to get back to studying!!

This is so exciting for me.

I decided to buy the next book


 
The reason I have jumped books is because I am quite familiar with Hiragana and Katakana now and I really need to focus on the Kanji. This book helps learn the Kanji and how it is used differently and so on. Which is the main thing I need to learn now.
 
Going through the old books wasn't helping me, I felt like I was going round and round in circles and wasn't getting anywhere. Quite bored to be honest. So I have jumped up to the next level.
 
I will keep trying to post when I can.

Minna no Nihongo - Lesson 4 Grammar

Good Afternoon!

It is time for the grammar for this lesson. The vocabulary is in the previous post.

1: 今(いま) ー 時(じ) ー 分(ふん) です
     To express time, the counter suffixes (じ) (o'Clock) and (ふん) (minutes) are used. The numbers are put before them. (ふん) is read ふん after 2, 5, 7 or 9 and ぷん after 1, 3, 4, 6, 8 or 10. 1, 6, 8 and 10 are read いっ, ろっ, はっ, じゅっ(じっ) before ぷん.
     The interrogative なん is used with a counter suffix to ask questions concerning number or amounts. Therefore, the word なんじ (or sometimes なんぷん) is used to ask the time.

       e.g    今(いま)(なん)(じ) ですか。        What time is it now?
                 ・・・ 7 時(じ) 10分(ぷん) です。         ・・・It's seven ten.

  [Note] は marks the topic of a sentence, which you leaned in Lesson 1. A geographical location can also be used as the topic as can be seen in the below example.

      e.g.     ニューヨーク は 今(いま)(なん)(じ) ですか。     In New York what time is it now?
                ・・・午(ご)(ぜん)     4時(じ)です。                            ・・・It's 4 a.m.


2:  V ます
      1) A verb with ます works as a predicate.
      2) ます makes a sentence polite.
       
          e.g わたし は 毎(まい)(にち)(べん)(きょう) します。      I study every day.

3:  Vます / Vません / Vました / Vませんでした
      1) ます is used when a sentence expresses a habitual thing or a truth. It is also used when a sentence expressed a thing that will occur in the future. The negative forms and the past tense are shown in the table below

      e.g 毎(まい)(あさ) 6時(じ) に 起(お)き ます。            I get up at six every morning.

            けさ 6時(じ) に 起(お)き ました。                       I got up at six this morning.

     2) Question forms of verb sentences are made in the same way as those of noun sentences; e.g the word order remains the same and the か is added to the end of the sentence.
          In answering such questions, the verbs in the questions are repeated. 
          そうです or そうじゃ ありません cannot be used.

         e.g. きのう  勉(べん)(きょう) しましたか。                       Did you study yesterday?
                ・・・はい、 勉(べん)(きょう) しました。                     ・・・Yes, I did.
                ・・・いいえ、 勉(べん)(きょう)しませんでした。       ・・・No, I didn't.
                毎(まい)(あさ)(なん)(じ)(お)き ますか。           What time do you get up every morning?
                ・・・6時(じ) に 起(お)き ます。                                  ・・・I get up at six.

4: N(time) に  V
    When a verb denotes a momentary action or movement, the time when it occurs is marked with the particle に. に is added when the noun before it uses a numeral. It can also be added to the days of the week, though it is not essential. When the noun does not use a numeral, に is not used.

       e.g  6時(じ)(ばん) に 起(お)きます。                                  I get up at six thirty.
              7月(がつ) 2日(ふつか) に 日本へ 来(き)ました。             I came to Japan on July 2nd. (L.5)
              日(にち)(よう)(び) 「に」 奈(な)(ら)へ 行(い)きます。 I'm going to Nara on Sunday. (L.5)
               きのう 勉(べん)(きょう) しました。                             I studied yesterday.

5: N1 から  N2 まで
    1) から indicates the starting time or place, and まで indicates the finishing time or place.

       e.g 9時(じ)から 5時(じ)まで 働(はたら)き ます。     I work from nine to five.
             (おお)(さか) から 東京(とうきょう)まで 3時(じ)(かん) かかり ます。      It takes three hours from Osaka to Tokyo. (L.11)

    2) から and まで are not always used together.
 
         e.g 9時(じ)から 働(はたら)きます。              I work from nine.

    3) ~から, ~まで or ~から ~まで is sometimes used with です added directly after either.

         e.g  銀(ぎん)(こう)は  9時(じ)から  3時(じ)まで です。     The bank is open from nine to three.
                昼(ひる)休(やす)み は 12時(じ)から です。       Lunchtime starts at twelve.

6: N1 と N2
    The particle と connects two nouns in coordinate relation.

    e.g. 銀(ぎん)(こう) (やす)みは 土(ど)(よう)(び) と (にち)(よう)(び) です。   The bank is closed on Saturdays and Sundays.

7: S
    ね is attached to the end of a sentence to add feeling to what the speaker says. It shows the speaker's sympathy or the speaker's expectation that the listener will agree. In the latter usage, it is often used to confirm something.

    e.g. 毎(まい)(にち)  10時(じ)ごろまで 勉(べん)(きょう) します。   I study till about ten everyday.
           ・・・大(たい)(へん) ですね。                                              ・・・That must be hard.
          
           山(やま)田(だ)さん の 電(でん)話(わ)番(ばん)号(ごう)は 871の 6813です。
           ・・・ 871の 6813 ですね。
           Mr. Yamada's telephone number is 871-6813.
           ・・・ 871-6813, right?

Kanji Table 1

Hello

I have been drawing up a Kanji table. There are so many for N5, but it is helping me learn them. I always find that writing them down helps. I also use an app called "Sticky Study" on iOS I have found it very helpful.

So these tables are split into Kanji, Kunyomi, Onyomi and English.

I will be honest- I am not entirely sure what Kunyomi and Onyomi are - all I know is that Kunyomi is the Japanese reading, and will usually be a stand-alone kanji or will have hiragana after it and Onyomi is the Chinese reading which is "sound reading" There are lots of websites which help understand how they work. I am not very good at explaining. This is one in particular. Kunyomi vs Onyomi

We are starting off with numbers! Nice and easy. :)

Reading Comprehension:

1: わたし の なまえ は ホンダ です。
